This week in class we have been talking about the US Open. To be more specific, the blow up by Serena Williams and the choice words by Roger Federer. We have talked about why it was a big deal. To start off, Serena Williams' blow up was controversial for a couple of reasons. The first being that she got called for a foot fault in the semifinals of the US Open, not to mention at a point in the match where she was a game from losing. the next reason is because of how she reacted, it was very uncharacteristic of her. The last reason is that she has never been called for a foot fault then all of a sudden in her countries Open, she was continuously being called for it. I think she handled the situation in an extreme manor. She did not need to threaten the line judge the way she did. I'm not saying that it was ok for her to threaten anyone, but the way she did was horrible. I still love Serena Williams and know she is one of the best in the world. Now I would like to talk about Roger Federer. Before I start, I do not like Roger Federer at all, that being said he is a great tennis player. During his finals match in the 2009 US Open, he began to cuss at the chair umpire after a late challenge by Juan Martin del Potro. He did have a legit argument, but had no right to cuss at the chair umpire. Overall, tempers can flair in the heat of a sporting event, but the athlete must have the restraint to handle it in a calm and rational manor.

What are you willing to do to win?

One class period we talked about what athletes were willing to do to win a game. The story of a baseball player was told by his coach to hit a batter on the other team. I am glad to hear that he refused. Which got me thinking, just how far would you go to win? From the first day i started playing competitive sports in second grade, I was told that winning is everything. Losing is never fun! Winning is what you work hard for day in and day out. When I was younger and in little league, my coach told me to hit a the next batter, and I told him to go fly a kite ( I did use more adult language, however). I left the field after that and told my dad. My dad was proud of me and told my coach off. My coach got kicked out of the league and my dad became coach for the rest of the season. What if I had listened to my coach at that time? I'm glad I didn't, because if I did, I don't know if I could live with myself today. I'm the type of person that doesn't want or wish that anyone gets hurt, even on a team I can not stand. There have been other cases of coaches ordering players to intentionally hurt opposing players. I remember a couple of years ago Head coach John Cheney at temple University told his player to hurt an opposing player. He later got fired for that. There are people out there who would hurt another player intentionally to win a game. That is completely wrong, if you can't win on a level playing field (with the opposing team not injured by your team) then you deserve to lose and be baned from sports for life!

Introduction

Hello world, my name is Scott Ritchey and I have never blogged before, so please don't tear me apart so I will never do it again. I am a Sport Management major at Bowling Green State University (BGSU). My major specialization is Sport Enterprise. This is my senior year and all my previous years have been at Bowling Green State University. I have always loved sports! I have played soccer since I was four years old, and still love sports to this day. I love to watch, play, and coach nearly every sport.

I started this blog for a couple of reasons: the first one being that I was required to either journal, blog, or do a final paper for a class. I chose to blog because I have never blogged before and thought it would be fun. Another reason I chose to blog was because I am terrible at writing papers and hate to do them.

I am a die hard fan of all my favorite teams. Those teams consists of Ohio State Football, Indianapolis Colts, Los Angeles Lakers, Syracuse Orange Basketball, Boston Red Sox, Los Angeles Galaxy, and Barcelona FC. I am a big fan of the Williams sisters, Andy Roddick, and Rafael Nadal, and Maria Sharapova. When it comes to golf I am a fan of Tiger Woods and Retief Goosen.

My favorite Athlete is Kobe Bryant. He is the GREATEST basketball player of all time! He is the best for three reasons. The first reason is that he scored 81 points in a single game, the second reason is that he has four rings, one regular season MVP (Most Valuable Player), and one Finals MVP. The last reason is that with five seconds or fewer in the game he is unstoppable!
